Gravel Driveway Repair in Syracuse NY: Fix Ruts Before Winter

Oct 7
2 min read

Does your car bump through the same rut every time you pull into the driveway? Maybe loose stone has spread into the yard, or a small pothole has grown after a rainy week. For homeowners planning gravel driveway repair in Syracuse NY, October is a useful time to look at those spots before winter weather makes the work harder.

Why check your gravel driveway in October?

Ruts and loose edges are easier to see and reach before snow covers them. Walk the driveway after rain if you can. Look for holes, soft spots, and places where water sits. A little planning now helps you choose the right repair and the right amount of stone.

Which driveway stone should you use?

Clifton Recycling lists two options on its stone page that can be used for driveway patches:

  • Driveway Stone is crushed limestone, about ¾ inch down to fine pieces. It can be used to patch stone driveways and potholes.

  • Run of Crush mixes stone up to 1½ inches with stone dust. It packs down well and can be used as a driveway base or for patches. It does not drain well.

Not sure which fits your driveway? Tell us how large and deep the damaged area is when you ask about stone.

Gravel driveway repair in Syracuse NY: simple steps

  1. Mark the damaged spots. Walk the driveway and note ruts, potholes, and any standing water.

  2. Clear loose material. Remove leaves, sticks, and mud from each hole. A patch needs a firm surface underneath.

  3. Add stone. Fill the low area a little at a time. Spread the stone so it blends into the driveway around it.

  4. Pack it down. Tamp a small patch by hand. Larger repairs may need equipment to compact the stone evenly.

  5. Check the finished surface. Make sure the patch is even enough to drive and walk across without creating a new dip.

Repair methods vary with the depth of the hole and the condition of the driveway. For a large damaged area, ask a local driveway contractor before ordering material.

When more stone is not the answer

If the same place puddles after every rain, a rut comes back soon after patching, or part of the driveway washes out, the issue may be how water moves across the site. Adding stone alone may not fix that. A contractor can check whether grading or drainage work is needed.

How much stone should you order?

Measure the length and width of the area, then estimate how deep the repair needs to be. For an estimate in cubic yards, multiply length × width × depth in feet, then divide by 27. If you have several patches, measure each one and add them together. Your order may also need extra material for compaction or uneven ground.
